As a homeschool mom, I’ve discovered that character curriculum is my absolute favorite thing to purchase and go through with my children.  So, I was very excited when Scripture Scribes from Laurelwood Books came up for a review!  I personally received the upper level, Words for Men of Honor and Women of Grace, this Scripture Scribes series also includes Primary and Middle School Levels.  Other members of the TOS Review Crew had the opportunity to review other levels.

First of all, let me introduce you to the books available in this handwriting curriculum:

Scripture Scribes Series:
His Name is Wonderful
One Another
Men of Honor and Women of Grace

When Words for Men of Honor and Women of Grace first came in the mail, I was absolutely in love.  Why have I not seen this before?  I had picked up character handwriting curriculum at homeschool fairs in the past, but this program exceeds them all in my opinion.

My daughter was fourteen when she first dug in, and she was equally enthralled with the cover art.  It’s beautiful!  It is intriguing, and my 9th grader was anxious to begin her lessons each day.  She has struggled with handwriting in the past, and she was looking forward to the chance of improving her writing skills.

Throughout the text, questions are asked such as What is Honor?, What is Mercy?, What is Compassion?, What is Love?, and What is Justice?  There are a total of 22 lessons, all of which include the copying of scripture.  What can be better than learning character lessons along with scripture?

At the end of the book, there is a short lesson on copying the scriptures through the ages.  I thought it was a very nice touch to finish out the book.  There is also a small section in the middle about translating the scriptures, which both my daughter and I truly enjoyed.

I asked for Maddy to write what she thought of the curriculum in her own words.  She truly did like it!

“I’ve really enjoyed using the Scripture Scribes handwriting book.  It’s really neat because each lesson is based off of a word such as patience, honesty, hope and joy.  At the beginning of each lesson, they define the word and give the Biblical definition, which I have really liked.  Also, it has helped with my handwriting, especially my cursive.”

My daughter is planning to continue working through this curriculum during her tenth grade year, which is fast approaching!  As I’ve mentioned before, now that I’ve found this series through Laurelwood Books, I plan on using it extensively in all levels of our homeschool.  Mary Ellen Tedrow-Wynn did a superb job putting this book together, and I think it’s awesome that she’s a homeschooling mom of seven.

Men of Honor and Women of Grace is aimed for seventh through twelfth graders.  You can purchase it for $19.95 here.  I really believe it is well worth the price!
